The international border line between Sri lanka and India, aling Palk Bay is very close, resulting in crossing over by fisher man one border to another border. This has been creating problems to Indian fishermen.

At the instance of Ministry of Home Affiars in the year 1999,The directorate planned a chain of 4 lighthouses(3 new and one upgradation) along the coast of Palk Bay.These lights dip at IBL there by warning Indian fishermen about IBL and preventing them from entry into alien territory.

The scheme is executed at accost of RS 2.5 crores,in 2003-05,comprising 3 new Lighthouses established at Ammapattinam,Passipattinam,Rameswaram and Improvement of Pamaban Lighthouse.

The lighthouses at Ammapattinam and passipattinam have been constructed adopting “SLIPFORM” Technology. On the equipment side, the uninterrupted exhibition of light for all the 365 da;ys,have been ensured by providing solar power back-up,exploiting non-conventional source of energy, which is eco-friendly as well as conserving fassil fuel.
